TERMS EXPLANATION
Back

The part of the book nearest the fold

Back lining

The application of glue on the spine of the book after which gauze is apply follow by a second layer of glue whereby the head and tail band together with the crepe paper are attached

Bleed

To trim the edge of printed material so as to cut into the print area

Board

The chipboard forming the internal structure of the case

Body

The main part of a book

Book cloth

Burst-bound

Adhesive-bound using a burst or perforate back

Case

A cover consisting of two boards, a hollow and a cover material

Case making

Forming the case by gluing the boards to the cover material

Casebound

Gluing book into a hard cover, as with textbooks, dictionaries and encyclopedias

Casing-in

Inserting the book block into the case

Centre spread

A centre opening where the print travels across two pages

Chipboard

A board made up of pasted layers of pulp. Used for the cases of a case bound book

Collate

Bringing together the folded signatures/sections in their proper order of a book i.e gather and collate

Cover

The paper, card or board to which the body of the book is secured. The cover of an casebound is called a "case"

Cover Material

Cover for case bound either of woven cloth or paper base

Crepe paper

Paper attached at the back lining stage over head and tail bands to add strength to the spine

Deboss

To stamp in such a way as to leave a depressed area on the finished piece

Drawn-on cover

A soft cover glued to a book block

Dummy

A plain paper test copy

Edges

The cut edges of a book

Edition Bound

see casebound

Emboss

To stamp in such a way that a raised image is left on the finished piece

Endpaper / Endsheet

A sheet folded once use to glued to the outside signatures used for casing-in

Folding

Large printed sheet folded to produce a signature of 4,8,12,16,24 or 32 pages

Foot

The bottom of the book

Foredge

The front of the book; the margin on the outside edge

Gathering see collate
Gilt-edging

To apply a thin golden foil on the edges of a book

Glued-back

A paper cover glued to the back of a book

Grain direction

The direction in which the majority of fibres lie in a sheet of paper

Gutter

An imposition term; internal gap between facing pages

Half-bound

Head

The top of the book

Head / Tailbands

Decorative ribbons attached to the head and tail of the spine of a case bound book

Head trim

The distance between the edge of a folded signature and the final trim at the head of a book. Minimum 1/8", often 1/4 "

Hinge

The joint of a flexible-covered book; see Joint

Hinge score

A score approximately 1/4" up from the spine of a soft cove book, designed to allow the cover to open without stressing the glue that holds it to the text

Hollow

A strip of board in the centre of a case to stiffen the spine

Imposition

Arranging the pages of a book for printing; this determines how folding is done

Insert

A glued-in section or two signatures saddled into one

Jacket

Paper dust-cover over the case

Joint

The parts on either side of a book block on which the boards hinge; the abutments formed for the case in rounding and backing

Landscape

Oblong loose or folded sheet or book having its longer sides as head and foot

Leaf

Two backing pages of a book

Limp binding

Binding with a soft cover

Masking

McCain sewing

A method of sewing a book-through the sides instead of the backbone

Milling

The grinding of the spine usually about 1/8" in perfect binding

Mull cloth

A coarse variety of muslin which forms the first lining of a casebound book

Nipping

Pressing book blocks after sewing to remove bulk and air

One-up

One book per clamp, as in magazine binding. see two-up

Padding

Edges adhesively bound for easy peel-out

Page

One side of a leaf

Pagination

The page number of a book

Perfect binding

Unsewn binding in which collated text are roughen and milled at the back and hot adhesive applied and cover drawn on.

Perforated binding

Adhesive binding, where signature folds are not cut off but perforated

Perforation

Holes punched to let out air or let glue in

Portrait

An upright image or page

Quarter-bound

A casebound book with stronger back and corners

Roughing The preparation of a book backbone prior to adhesive application
Round back

A case bound book that with the foredge concave and the spine edge convex

Rounding and backing Rounding : giving a book a convex appearance and a concave foredge.
Backing : producing projecting shoulders
Saddle stitch

A method of stitching by placing them open astride a saddle-shaped and stitching through the back normally with chromed wire

Score

To mechanically press a grove onto heavy paper or board to make it easy for folding

Self-cover

A cover printed on the same sheet of paper on the text page

Sewing

Fastening together the sections of a book with thread

Shoulder

A projection by rounding and backing to help to hold the book in the case

Side stitch

To bind by wiring or sewing the sheets together sideways

Signature A folded book-section. Abbreviation : sig.
Slipcase

A box, usually cloth-covered board , which holds a book or a set of books leaving spines exposed to view

Smashing

Pressing a book in a machine , after sewing to compress the pages and expel air between them. Also know as "nipping"

Smyth sewing A method of sewing named after the Smyth brothers who developed this method whereby thread passes through the book's back bone interlocking them
Soft cover

Spine

The bound edge of a book or its cover

Square back

The back of a book that is bound but not rounded also call flat back

Stamping

The impression of letters, normally gold or silver

Tail

The bottom edge of the book

Thread sewing

Tight back

A book cover glued to the body of the book at the back

Tipping in / on

Gluing a separate sheet on or in

Trimming

The trimming of the head, tail and foredge of a book block

Two-up

Binding in units of two which are subsequently cut in the middle making two books

Yapp

The edges of the cover material which overlaps the cut edge of the book block, as e.g in a soft bible
