| Body |

A cover consisting of two boards, a hollow and a cover material |
| Case making |

Inserting the book block into the case |
| Centre spread |
A centre opening where the print travels across two pages |
| Chipboard |
A board made up of pasted layers of pulp. Used for the cases of a case bound book |
| Collate |
Bringing together the folded signatures/sections in their proper order of a book i.e gather and collate |
| Cover |
The paper, card or board to which the body of the book is secured. The cover of an casebound is called a "case" |

Cover for case bound either of woven cloth or paper base |
| Crepe paper |
Paper attached at the back lining stage over head and tail bands to add strength to the spine |
| Deboss |
To stamp in such a way as to leave a depressed area on the finished piece |

| Grain direction |
The direction in which the majority of fibres lie in a sheet of paper |
| Gutter |
An imposition term; internal gap between facing pages |

| Head / Tailbands |
Decorative ribbons attached to the head and tail of the spine of a case bound book |
| Head trim |
The distance between the edge of a folded signature and the final trim at the head of a book. Minimum 1/8", often 1/4 " |

The joint of a flexible-covered book; see Joint |
| Hinge score |
A score approximately 1/4" up from the spine of a soft cove book, designed to allow the cover to open without stressing the glue that holds it to the text |

A strip of board in the centre of a case to stiffen the spine |

Arranging the pages of a book for printing; this determines how folding is done |
| Insert |
A glued-in section or two signatures saddled into one |
| Jacket |

| Joint |
The parts on either side of a book block on which the boards hinge; the abutments formed for the case in rounding and backing |

Oblong loose or folded sheet or book having its longer sides as head and foot |

Pressing book blocks after sewing to remove bulk and air |

| Padding |
Edges adhesively bound for easy peel-out |

Unsewn binding in which collated text are roughen and milled at the back and hot adhesive applied and cover drawn on. |

Backing : producing projecting shoulders |
| Saddle stitch |
A method of stitching by placing them open astride a saddle-shaped and stitching through the back normally with chromed wire |
| Score |
To mechanically press a grove onto heavy paper or board to make it easy for folding |
| Self-cover |
A cover printed on the same sheet of paper on the text page |
| Sewing |
Fastening together the sections of a book with thread |
| Shoulder |
A projection by rounding and backing to help to hold the book in the case |
| Side stitch |
To bind by wiring or sewing the sheets together sideways |
| Signature |

| Slipcase |
A box, usually cloth-covered board , which holds a book or a set of books leaving spines exposed to view |
| Smashing |
Pressing a book in a machine , after sewing to compress the pages and expel air between them. Also know as "nipping" |
| Smyth sewing |
A method of sewing named after the Smyth brothers who developed this method whereby thread passes through the book's back bone interlocking them |
