The Future of Car Audio, According to Pioneer
Welcome to the world of Full Digital Processors and Time Alignment

As promised, here is Part 2 of our Audio Klinik, featuring the Pioneer DEX-P9R/DEQ-P9 installation, used in combination with Reference Series amplifier from with Reference Series amplifier from Zapco, and speakers from Eton (Hexacone Technology series), set up in our 'Dr Audio' Mr Kho's 300SL.
To get an expert opinion on the quality of reproduction by this system, we invited Greg Lyons for a listen.

Setting Up
Head Unit - Pioneer DEX-P9 and DEQ-P9 Digital Signal Processor.

Amplifiers - Two units of ZapcoReference Series amplifiers (Zopco 200 2X50W and Zapco 360 4X50W) are used. These give a total of 6-channel output. Twochannels for powering a pair of 7-inch woofers. Two for driving the 5 1/4" mid-range speakers, and two for the pair of tweeters.

Speakers - all the speakers used are from the top range of Eton, a high-end German speaker maker. This topof the range series - the Classic Line- features the Hexacone Technology used on the construction of the mids.Based on the honeycomb design, the diaphragm is light and rigid, offering enhanced response from better wave dispersion.
The diaphragm of the tweeter is made of a reason trhat yhis tweeter has one of the sweetest-sounding repoduction in the industry.

Wiring

A - RCA Cable... Aural Dynamics Silverline series inteconnect cables are used thorughout the system.
B - Hot Wire... Aura Dynamics cables are used to connect the speakers.
C- Power Supply Cable... Aura Dynamic 4-gauge cables are used to channel the power supply to the amplifier.

Tuning
Tuning was done using the built-in digital electronic X-over digital 30-band equaliser, as well as the digital time alignment processor. The RTA was used to confirm the frequency response.

Why?
The purpose of this installation was to show that it is possible to expand the possibilities of the in-car audio system using full digital processors. The digital time-alignment function allows very precise delivery of the music output from every speaker to the ears of the listener. The system relies on the ability of the digital components to 'align' the arrival time of all speakers to the listener. The system works by measuring the distance of the various speakers to the ears, and from this data the digital processor will work out the optimum arrival time of the outputs of all speakers to the sweet spot. Several sweet spots can be programmed into the system tuning. This technology offers a previously-unattainable degree of front staging, imaging effect and music separation, finally meeting the challenge of overcoming the imperfect listening environment presented by the interior of a car. Another benefit is that there is more freedom in placement of the speakers.

Cost
RM20,000 only (According to Dr Audio Mr Kho, it would take about double the amount of money to achieve the sort of sound reproduction effect andquality with conventional components)
